The new Unit 10 – Commercial Production looks at manufacturing and mass production and specifically Just in Time and Just in Case models. I wonder where the new manufacturing revolution fits into these paradigms where you are able to go onto a website, choose a classic design and then modofy and update it before asking for it to go into production. OpenDesk is just one such example – that would be excellent to show students in terms of materials, manufacturing and project design.
Production is handled by Digital Fabricators with the specialist CNC equipment – wouldn’t it be great as a major project for students in the new syllabus to utilise these resources and would really set apart the Higher Level projects extra criteria devoted to manufacturing.
