Foreign films overrated?

I read this interesting take ont he trend toward the importation of non-english language genre dramas into UK TV, principally the Scandinavians ones, and the soft critical reception they receive there.

I wonder does the same (or the opposite apply to foreign films). As a native English speaker

living in France and struggling to learning just adequate enough French to watch a feature film without subtitles, I’m struck by just how much tosh the French film industry seems to produce, mostly aping the genres of their UK/US  counterparts. Most of these never see the inside of an English speaking cinemas but some do, and I wonder what kind of critical reception they might generate there, and how when measure against detailed analysis of home grown films whether the romance of subtitles papers over some dodgy cracks.
