Flerovium (Fl) and Livermorium (Lv) – chances are that these are new elements to you – and they should be!
It is now thought that the IUPAC will agree to officially name these elements as part of the periodic table in a few months time.
Fl, atomic number 114 has been named after physicist Georgiy Flerov.
Lv, atomic number 116 has been named after the Californian lab that discovered it.
The names had been tentatively released to allow the general public to comment on their suitability and it seems that the IUPAC is now happy to go ahead and make their names official – 10 years after they were first discovered!
